A different hand from the carved work, and a different mood: glossy black glaze, and blossoms painted straight onto it in pale lilac and green rather than cut through slip.

Both the cup rim and the edge of the saucer are finished with a fine line of raised white dots, laid on one at a time. A single small flower sits in the middle of the saucer, where the cup lifts away from it.

Sold as a set. Zhao Ruyan is signed on the base of the cup.

Material
Speckled stoneware, blended in the studio from Yixing ore with kaolin, feldspar, quartz and grog. Fired to 1260 °C.
Care
Hand wash only — warm water and a soft sponge. Microwave and fridge safe. Not for the dishwasher: hand washing keeps the glaze and the painting at their best.

Made, painted and finished by Zhao Ruyan in Yixing.
