The same form as No. 1 — a wide bowl lifted onto a pedestal foot, with a full round loop for a handle — but a different hand-drawn face. Here the white slip is left broad and open: petals are flecked with small dark specks and drawn through with a few fine veins, while the leaves behind them are filled with close parallel lines.

Only the shapes between the flowers are cut back to the dark clay, so this cup reads pale where No. 1 reads dark. Two cups, one pattern, no repeat — that is the whole point of drawing it by hand each time.

The interior and the pedestal foot are finished in a dark glossy glaze. Zhao Ruyan is signed into the base.

The pattern is called Yunshui Xiaohua — cloud and water, and a small flower.

The base of the cup, Zhao Ruyan signed by hand into a pale circle inside the unglazed foot ring

The maker’s mark

Signed Zhao Ruyan on the foot, written out in full inside the unglazed foot ring.

Material
Speckled stoneware, blended in the studio from Yixing ore with kaolin, feldspar, quartz and grog. Fired to 1260 °C.
Care
Hand wash only — warm water, a soft sponge, a soft brush for the carved lines. Microwave and fridge safe. Not for the dishwasher: the heat and detergent dull the carved surface over time.
Maker
Thrown, carved and finished by Zhao Ruyan in Yixing.
