A generous cup — wider than it is tall — lifted onto a pedestal foot so it sits above the table rather than on it. The handle is a full round loop, glazed pale against the dark wall.

The whole bowl is given over to the carving. Petals are left in white slip and filled with fine incised lines, and the clay between them is cut back to the dark speckled body, so the flowers read as light against night. There is no repeat and no border — the drawing simply runs around the cup until it meets itself.

The interior is a dark glossy glaze that keeps the rings of throwing; the foot is glazed to match. Zhao Ruyan is signed into the base.

The pattern is called Yunshui Xiaohua — cloud and water, and a small flower.

The base of the cup, Zhao Ruyan signed by hand into a circle of pale glaze inside the unglazed foot ring

The maker’s mark

Signed Zhao Ruyan on the foot, written out in full inside the unglazed foot ring.
