A jug for milk, for cream, or for pouring out a small pot of tea. The rim is pinched into a spout by hand and the handle pulled as a full round loop, glazed smooth where you hold it.

Below a plain band of white slip, the wall is carved edge to edge — broad petals, finely hatched leaves, and the dark speckled clay left as the space between them. Every line was cut by hand while the clay was still leather-hard, so the drawing never repeats.

The interior and rim are finished in a dark glossy glaze. The foot is left bare but for a small circle of white where zhao is signed.

The name it was given in the studio is Yunshui Xiaohua — cloud and water, and a small flower.

The maker’s mark

Signed by hand on the foot, in a small circle of pale glaze left bare of clay.
