A plain straight-sided cup with no handle — the kind you wrap a whole hand around. The rim and the interior are finished in a dark glossy glaze; everything below it is carved.

Petals are left broad in white slip, flecked with small dark specks and drawn through with a few fine veins; the long leaves behind them are filled with close parallel lines. The clay between is cut back to the dark speckled body, so the drawing runs right around the cup without a border or a repeat.

On the base, the pattern is written out in Chinese — 雲水三千, Yunshui Sanqian — with Zhao Ruyan signed beneath it.

The base carries the pattern name in Chinese, 雲水三千 (Yunshui Sanqian), with Zhao Ruyan signed beneath it.

Material
Speckled stoneware, blended in the studio from Yixing ore with kaolin, feldspar, quartz and grog. Fired to 1260 °C.
Care
Hand wash only — warm water, a soft sponge, a soft brush for the carved lines. Microwave and fridge safe. Not for the dishwasher: the heat and detergent dull the carved surface over time.

Thrown, carved and finished by Zhao Ruyan in Yixing.
