Cloud & Water Footed Cup No. 3
$148.00
The blossoms are kept to a band around the rim and everything below is left as plain slip, so the eye rests. The bowl tapers to a small dark pedestal foot.
The piece to look at is the handle. Not a round loop but a broad flat strap, carved all over — leaves and small round fruits cut through the slip exactly as they are on the cup wall. Turned side-on it reads as a plain band; turned to face you it is as worked as the rim.
It is the part of a cup nobody bothers to decorate, because it takes as long as the rest and most people never look. That is the argument for buying handmade, in one detail.
The interior is dark glossy glaze. On the base the pattern is written out in Chinese — 雲水三千 — with Zhao Ruyan beneath.
